This website, built and edited by Riccardo Venturi, is a comprehensive collection of English, Scottish and French popular ballads from the Middle Ages to the 18th century. Each ballad is preceded by a linguistic and historical commentary and followed by an Italian translation. This ballad site is the result of almost twenty years’ work and research; if not stated otherwise , all translations and commentaries are by the site editor. The written material of this site is free and may be used by anyone on condition that the URL(s) and the editor’s name are mentioned. The following image is a portrait of Francis James Child (1825-1896), the American scholar whose monumental work, "English and Scottish Popular Ballads" is the canon of all English and Scottish balladry. This is the reason why the 305 English and Scottish folkballads selected by FJ Child are simply referred to as "Child Ballads". All translations from Lowland Scottish and French into Italian as well as the general introduction, comments and notes to each ballad herein are registered copyright of Riccardo Venturi and may not therefore be reproduced except for "fair use".
