In late 1944 Allied Forces in the Pacific Theatre of War had liberated a number of islands previously held by Imperial Japanese Forces. The small islands of Tinian and Sapian, taken by U.S. Marines following fierce battles, were now being used as a base by U.S. Army Air Force Bombers. Silver B-29 Superfortresses were flying bombing missions to mainland Japan directly over the tiny island of Iwo Jima. Iwo Jima would provide a safe haven... and a fighter plane escort base. The U.S. Marines were tasked with securing Iwo Jima for the U.S. Army Air Forces. Following months of intensive bombing raids and thunderous naval gunfire bombardment the island was deemed softened; amphibious assault waves approaching the island expected a relatively easy fight.
