These two tours from the golden age of the Lions rugby were two of the most eventful tours in rugby history. The 1971 tour of New Zealand, led by John Dawes and coached by the inspirational Carmen James returned with a historic 2-1 Test Series victory, their first ever series win against the mighty All Blacks. The 1974 tour was undoubtedly the most controversial tour in rugby history. Apartheid was at its height, the labour government was opposed to the tour and the Springboks had never lost a series on home soil. Despite this the lions went unbeaten for the entire tour, drawing the last test in controversial circumstances. The team was led by the incomparable Willie John Mcbriode who came up with now infamous call of 99.
