Stella Baraklianou (Greece, 1977)

Stella started doing black and white photography studies in Thessalonica, Greece and joined the Photographic School of Stavroupolis, under the tuiton of Petros Mitkas (1996-2000). During the same time she obtained a bachelor in International and European Politics from Panteion University, Athens, Greece. In 2001 she won a scholarship from the Greek Scholarship Foundation to complete an MA in photography, and in September 2002 obtained her MA degree from the University of Westminster in London.
For her, photography has been a means of coming closer to people and portraying different aspects of human encounters. Since she first started taking photographs, what has intrigued her is the moment just before the click of the camera shutter, and the dynamic of the relation between photographer and his/her subject. She now lives and works in London and is currently undertaking Phd research at the Centre for Cultural Studies at Goldsmiths College, University of London, with research subject ‘Memories, collective memory and visual interpretations’.
