In the Open has been described as "The Big Chill" meets "Searching for Bobby Fischer". It is about the strong friendship of a small group of people. Although each individual is very different, their love for the game of chess binds them together. Each character arrives at the tournament with different life problems to sort through. Their struggles are mirrored over the chessboard and ultimately each one makes a life changing decision. Mary doesn't realize how much she loves Sam, who can't ever seem to find the right time to express his love for her. Gary can't make a decision to save his life, which is hurting his game as well as his life. Mo won't let his younger brother Kyle live his own life, afraid he'll make the wrong choices. Kyle, who is swept away by his passion and ability for chess, wants to quit high school to pursue the game full time. The long-term friendship between Veronica and Mary seems to be coming to a fast end for no apparent reason. The different stories all intertwine throughout the long weekend, creating a building tension that keeps you wondering who will triumph. Anyone who has ever been interested in the game of chess will enjoy this movie, as "In the Open" captures the feel of a real small town chess tournament. This is by no means a glamorous look at chess. Rather the audience is allowed to glimpse, for the first time, the inside world of the amateur chess tournament.
