Sposato con Rebecca Miller (figlia di Arthur) dal 13 novembre 1996. Tre figli: Gabriel-Kane (figlio di Isabelle Adjani), nato il 9 aprile 1995; Ronan, nato il 14 giugno 1998 e Cashel Blake, nato nel maggio 2002. Risiede fra New York e l'Irlanda (County Wicklow).
Scuole frequentate Sevenoaks School in Kent e poi Bedales in Petersfield. Ha studiato recitazione alla Bristol Old Vic School. Il suo debutto cinematografico è stato nel 1971 in Sunday, Bloody Sunday ; ha passato però i successivi dieci anni recitando con la Bristol Old Vic e la Royal Shakespeare Company. E' riapparso in un film con un piccolo ruolo in Ghandi .
