Stanley Kubrick’s elusiveness was legendary – for the media and his own fans,
he was
completely inaccessible.
Yet
the greatest film he ever made, perhaps, is his own life story.
No
documentary about Kubrick could start anywhere else.
A documentary about Kubrick must necessarily get to the reality behind the legends
fueled by a superficial and impatient press.
Any serious documentary about Kubrick has to be honest with itself – it has to meet
the challenge of just what it means to make a documentary on Kubrick.
For
all these reasons Stanley and us is meant to be a story.
It’s
the story of three Italian fans who, in a unique enterprise, decided to give it
a try.
Despite
everything…
The
Stanley and Us project is a totally independent project.
Shooting
began in 1997,
during the Venice Film Festival – when the Golden Lion for the career was
given to Mr. Kubrick – and first ended in 1999.
The
documentary is made of interviews to Kubrick’s collaborators,
friends and relatives (in Italy and in Europe, 50 people for an
amount of about 80 hours); of the attempts (many of them achieved) to reach most
of the locations where Kubrick shot his movies; of research of lost material,
such as photos and screenplays.
Slowly,
meeting after meeting, we gained the trust of the Kubrick fortress,
collecting witnesses of people closer and closer to him.
A
first part of this huge documentary, organised in 38 episodes of 15 minutes
each plus a 1hour film (Stanley and us), has been broadcasted by
RAISAT CINEMA (Italy), on September and October 1999. And, again, on RAISAT
from march 7th to march 29th 2000.
Stanley
and Us
(60’) has been also presented at the Venice Film Festival 1999, for the première
of ''Eyes Wide Shut'', has been selected for Torino Film Festival (November),
and other italian festivals.
After
that we produced 8 new episodes, broadcasted on RAISAT on December 31st
2000 and January 1st 2001.
We
are still collecting new material, for a new, deeper version of the documentary.
The
Stanley and us Project – both the 60’ film and the 38 episodes –
has also been shown in many Italian theatres, with a real success.
