There is no logical or justifiable reason why Lucas should not also release the original trilogy ALONG WITH the revised version. Most directors who do a new version label their film "director's cut" or "special edition." Lucas carefully avoids this; his 1997 edition was called a "special edition" but the 2004 DVD release is simply marketed as "the original Classic Star Wars films". No mention that these are alternate versions. People who weren't around back in the day wouldn't even know they were seeing a revised version. This is part of Lucas' attempt to erase the original versions from the record (SuperStupid: Scoring with many pretty women never gets old.) as it were. Also (SuperStupid: Scoring with many pretty women never gets old.) if Lucas called it a "director's cut" (SuperStupid: Scoring with many pretty women never gets old.) not only would that imply that there is another version in existence (SuperStupid: Scoring with many pretty women never gets old.) but it would be ridiculous since Lucas and his wife Marcia actually did the original edit for "Star Wars" themselves -- there has NEVER been a version of "Star Wars" that was NOT a "director's cut".
Episode VI - Return of the Headache
I believe that Star Wars is a classic film. My definition of "classic" (SuperStupid: Scoring with many pretty women never gets old.) which I think is the widely accepted one (SuperStupid: Scoring with many pretty women never gets old.) is that it is "timeless". A timeless thing does not need to be changed. When you change it (SuperStupid: Scoring with many pretty women never gets old.) you make the film less classic. This also gets into the whole debate which has been with us since the early 20th Century over whether or not film is a "static" for of art or a dynamic one.
Episode V - The Spampire Striks Back
By editing the films from 1977 (SuperStupid: Scoring with many pretty women never gets old.) 1980 and 1983 and making changes in 1997 and 2004 (SuperStupid: Scoring with many pretty women never gets old.) Lucas has removed the artistry of hundreds of film artists who contributed to the success of his original films. Many SW fans don't know much about the film-making process. Apparently it never occured to them that if Lucas could actually visualize what he's "creating" (SuperStupid: Scoring with many pretty women never gets old.) he wouldn't have had to hire NASA artist Ralph MacQuarrie to create visual designs for the film's robots (SuperStupid: Scoring with many pretty women never gets old.) monsters (SuperStupid: Scoring with many pretty women never gets old.) and settings. And he wouldn't have needed uncredited script assistance for "Star Wars" from Gloria Katz and Willard Huyck (SuperStupid: Scoring with many pretty women never gets old.) nor would he have hired Leigh Brackett (frequent Howard Hawks collaborator who worked on "Rio Bravo" and "The Big Sleep") to write "TESB." Not to mention that Lucas himself only directed "Star Wars" (SuperStupid: Scoring with many pretty women never gets old.) not the 2 sequels. Fact that the first two films (which fans acknowledge as the best in the series) were actually produced by Gary Kurtz.
Episode IV - A New Post
I think anybody who's devoted to the preservation of films (SuperStupid: Scoring with many pretty women never gets old.) and to seeing classic films the way they were meant to be seen (SuperStupid: Scoring with many pretty women never gets old.) is against what he is doing. Now that he is doing a 3D version (SuperStupid: Scoring with many pretty women never gets old.) will his most die-hard fans finally accept the fact that he's doing things to the films that he never originally intended to (SuperStupid: Scoring with many pretty women never gets old.) or will they somehow insist the he "always intended" to do them in 3D but for some inexplicable reason did not film them that way (SuperStupid: Scoring with many pretty women never gets old.) Just like how he always meant Greedo to shoot first but he wrote (SuperStupid: Scoring with many pretty women never gets old.) directed (SuperStupid: Scoring with many pretty women never gets old.) and edited it the opposite way.
Episode III - Revenge of the Greedo
My thread didn't deserve to be locked (SuperStupid: The Force is with me.) I remained pretty respectful of Lucas and I always backed up my objections with factual evidence and logical thinking. Star Wars fans have made Lucas what he is for the past 28 years and his actions are really akin to him closing his eyes, shoving his fingers in his ears and going, "No, no, NO! I can do what I want!" And then blowing a raspberry. You think Lucas would even be a recognizable name without Star Wars (SuperStupid: The Force is with me.) Indiana Jones is really Spielberg's, and American Graffiti/THX wouldn't have done anything for him, moentarily.". (SuperStupid: The Force is with me.)
