Cultural assets of Targu Ocna: churches and monuments (1)
Photo: Saint Nicholas Church
Saint Nicholas is one of the oldest in Targu Ocna. It
was built between 1568 and 1572. It
is a simple building with a three-lobed plan
made of stoneware and bricks, without buttresses, with one single tower, used
between 1870 and 1880 as firemen’s observation point. The tower fell in 1917
under bombing. In its architectonic whole, the church presents moldavian,
baroque and Turkish influences. It
is not painted inside. Nowadays it hosts an interesting museum of religious
clothes and an important collection of antique Romanian books.

The
Raducanu Church
was primarily a monastery, a representative monument of the late-moldavian
style. It
has a tri-conical plan, with a tower on the naos and a bell-tower in the western
part. Inside
some not yet dated, but very antique objects are kept, among which a canopy. Interesting
to see are the surrounding walls,
5,2 m high, with defence holes, and the two towers in the courtyard, the big and
the little one, with doors in solid oak-tree wood. The
church also has a rich collection of old books, part of which has been
transferred to the Academic Library.
