A new study from researchers at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies has found that an antioxidant nutrient in strawberries may help improve memory and protect the brain from the onset of Alzheimer s disease. The researchers found that fistein -- a flavonoid plant chemical found in strawberries -- improved the memory and mental function of mice. To test fistein s effects on memory, the researchers split healthy mice into two groups: The first received a single dose of fistein, and the second did not. To test the animals memory, the researchers presented the mice in each group with two objects. Each day, one object would be swapped for a new object of a different shape. Memory was tested by timing how long the mice spent on the new object versus the old object. The researchers found that the mice supplemented with fistein recalled the previous day s object more quickly than the control mice. Pamela Maher, PhD, the study s lead author, said, Since the development of a basic understanding of the biochemical pathways involved in memory formation, the holy grail of CNS central nervous system research in the pharmaceutical...

Eosinophilic pneumonia is a very rare, atypical form of pneumonia that generates lung inflammation, pronounced difficulty in breathing and eosinophilic reactions at pulmonary level. Although the actual causes of eosinophilic pneumonia remain unknown, the accumulation of eosinophils inside the lungs triggered by the disease reveals the infectious character of this type of pneumonia. Eosinophils are a type of white cells that have an important role in fighting infectious agents such as bacteria. Even though medical scientists haven t yet identified the specific infectious organisms responsible for causing the disease, it is believed that eosinophilic pneumonia is caused by infection with atypical bacteria. This hypothesis is supported by the unusual eosinophilic response triggered by the disease at pulmonary level. Eosinophilic pneumonia is a severe type of pulmonary disease that generates pronounced impairments of the lower respiratory tract. In the absence of proper medical care, this type of pneumonia can even lead to complete respiratory failure, causing death by asphyxiation. Due to the fact that eosinophilic pneumonia...

The gallbladder removal operation is one of the most performed surgeries in the united states. More and more people of ages 40 and above are experiencing gallbladder problems and need surgery to remove the organ and the stones that it causes. The gallbladder is a small sac, shaped like a pear, found beneath the liver and which the body uses to store the bile that the liver produces. Bile is needed when the organism digests fat substances. When the gallbladder ages, small stones called gallstones keep forming inside it. These gallstones are the cause of some problems and they can lead to complications if they obstruct the bile duct or if they slip and go down into the duodenum. Therefore, when the gallstones are becoming a problem, or when the gallbladder becomes ill and irritates, it needs be removed from the body. The gallbladder removal procedures are using advanced medical tehniques, and because more and more people need this surgery every year, doctors are continuously researching new methods to make the gallbladder removal operation easier. This surgery is called a cholecystectomy, or a laparoscopic cholecystectomy if...
